My grandmother used to pay me a quarter every time she called me the wrong name...
She would often mistake me for my cousin or aunt and stumble through the list of other female family members on the list before arriving at the correct destination. I would giggle, hold out my palm and look up at her, flashing a cheeky gap toothed smile, and command her to pay up! I had 5 cent candies to buy! I never awarded this game of trickery a second thought. I was "persnickety" and she was ooold! Of course she was forgetful. End of story.
But, as I started to get older, and life started to accumulate stress, I would randomly catch myself at a loss for words or forgetting, mid sentence, what I was talking about in the first place (a common challenge for extroverts I am told because we don't think before we speak - oops).
I began to wonder if there was something I was missing in my life that could prevent these innocuous thought bubbles from disappearing so quickly. Ergo my pursuit of natural healing through food.
Food in its natural habitat had always interested me and I often found myself walking around the neighborhood, rubbing leaves between my thumb and forefinger to release the fantastic smells they contain, before sneakily snapping off a branch, shoving it into my pocket and running home to experiment with ways to use it in the kitchen.
It was here that I developed a fascination for Rosemary - a woody evergreen shrub with needle like leaves, Rosmarinus officinalis, a native of the Mediterranean. It has long been praised for its note-worthy health benefiting phyto-nutrients and anti-oxidants, and is commonly used as a seasoning in the kitchen. The grounding scent can also be found in soaps, shampoos, cleaning supplies, and medicines. It is energizing and refreshing to say the least.
Rosemary contains numerous health benefiting volatile essential oils known to have rubefacient (counterirritant), anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-septic properties. Just like oil of oregano it can fend off colds, but better yet, it has a remarkable affinity for recall and memory!
So how do we use it without having to spend hours cooking a pot roast? Rosemary essential oils can be found at most large grocers or health food stores.
Simply keep the bottle in a convenient spot and sniff it throughout the day when you are concentrating or trying to memorize something.
Sniff the oil again when you want to recall what you were learning earlier and voila - your a genius. Well, it may take a little more effort then this but it helped me study for exams when I was a student so why not give it a try!?! You can also achieve the same effect by putting it in your nebulizer or diffuser at work. Plus, it smells brilliant around the Holidays so why not simply display it in a vase on your kitchen table.
You can add it to water with berries for a natural vitamin water, something I love to do during the summer months. But when it turns cold outside to drink it in my tea. 2-3 inch sprig of Rosemary
1 wedge of lemon
1-2 slice of fresh ginger root
Boil the kettle. Add ingredients to a mug. Pour over with hot water. Cover (to trap the brain boosting volatile oils) and steep for 5 minutes before drinking. Repeat as many times as necessary.
